It is always a good idea to start packing way ahead of time, at least two month in advance. Starts packing all the things you don’t need. For example if you are moving in the winter you can start packing your summer items first.
What ever you don’t need or don’t use don’t pack it. Have a garage sell or sell it through Craiglist or kijiji or other free advertising websites or donated to a charity. Mark fragile items in red (preferably) on all outer side of the boxes, containing delicate or easy breakable items. Use bubble wrap sheets or blankets to pack your most delicate items.
For picture and mirrors use a special picture and mirror box. If the pictures are thin you can fit two or three inside each box. A piece of cardboard between them is recommended. Pack clothing, shoes, stuffed animals etc in large strong garbage bags.
Boxes that are half full will surely be crushed and boxes that are too heavy or over filled can tear or fall apart. Boxes should weight anywhere between 30-40 lbs, don’t make boxes to heavy. The last thing you would want is for your friends or movers to injure themselves lifting heavy boxes that you packed.
Never pack explosives, combustibles (gasoline, propane), perishable food or liquids.
Keep important document with you. Such as passports, certificate, expensive jewellery. Don’t leave these things with the movers take them with you.
Moving Tips for local moves
Tips on how to make the best of your moving experience:
Figure out a plan of action you'll want to price out moving companies first.
Let the company know about any overweight items such a piano or fridge, access restrictions (small elevator, walk-up only, narrow driveway) and whether you’ll need help with dismantling or assembly of furniture.
For a local move, you typically pay by the hour. Hourly charges vary depending on the size of the truck, the number of movers assigned to the move and the date of the move. Because movers usually charge a higher rate during peak periods, you will save some cash if you can move at an off-peak period.
Find out your condominium rules. Moving into a condo isn’t as simple as pulling up to the lobby and loading your boxes onto an elevator. Be sure to check the moving policy before planning your move .
Make sure both your origin and destination location are ready. If you are moving and apartment, book the elevator in the apartment building and notify your landlord or building caretaker of the arrival time of your movers. Arrange for street parking if needed.
Be prepared when the movers turn up. Have all your belongings ready to go, as you will be charged an hourly rate for the time the movers wait.
For a local move, you should make an inventory of goods to be moved and oversee the loading & unloading or arrange for someone else to supervise. If goods are damaged or lost, make sure it’s noted on the inventory and notify the movers rapidly. Normally, claims must be made within 15 days.
When the loading has been completed, do a walk –through of your place to ensure that everything has been loaded and nothing is left in closets, behind doors in attics or garages.
When the unloading has been completed, do a walk –through of your new place and all hallways and pathways into your premises as well as the moving truck to ensure that everything has been unloaded.
Treat your movers if your movers have done a good job not scratches on the walls or your furniture you should give them a tip . On a hot summer day the movers would surely appreciate a cold drink
Enjoy your new home.
